Areal Extents of Animals and Plants

This section of BioDat was created due to the joint efforts of the group of specialists who prepared generalizations on the ranges of species (genera, families) for several taxonomic groups. The works on creation of areal maps were organized by Alexander Martynov. Summarization of materials was performed by: I.Yu.Makeeva - vascular plants, N.V.Mitskevich - macromycete fungi, G.P.Urbanavichus - lichens, A.V.Matalin - ground beetles, V.Yu. Maslyakov - bumblebees and timber beetles, N.I. Shilin - fish and round-mouthed fish (Cyclostomes) occurring in fresh water habitats, A.T.Bozhansky - amphibians and reptilians, V.G.Vinogradov - nesting birds, A.Yu.Puzachenko - mammals.

For development of taxa distribution maps we used the scheme of territorial division of the former USSR into 600 natural areas. Each natural area is named after one of the biggest river basin and territorial ecosystem type. In some cases names of residential localities or other geographic reference points were used for designation of a natural area. Lists of areas for each habitat are provided to the user along with search results.

If the users are doing search and formation on their own, they should bear in mind that quite a big division of the zoning map is used as a minimal habitat measurement unit, and in case if species occures only on a small part of the area still the whole area is indicated on the habitat scheme. Users can select a taxonomic group, which is of interest to them, and to find in the list the species (genera, family) they need.

Search results are provided in the form of the schematic map and the list of zoning grid divisions, for which the author of the generalization confirms occurrence of a certain species. Any user can download these materials to his computer or to make changes in the schematic map of the habitat. In this case a new (updated) scheme of distribution (containing the name of the author who made the corrections) will appear in the database, but initial basic cartographic summarizations will remain unchanged.

Attention! If you are planning to put information on the species of certain area, region, site - do not do it here. Use the capabilities of the specialized project "Put Your Dot on the Map!"

To those with limited Internet access we offer one more chance to contribute to our shared creative endeavor. Downloading this AREAL EXTENT editing program (Zip format, 146 K, in Russian) to your computer you will get the possibility to develop your own file on habitats and later to pass it to the database through a special form, the link for which is shown in each topical section. You can import data from any on-line database to this program; for that purpose it would be enough to click the link "Import Data" and to perform a simple operation according to the instruction given.
