Flora and Fauna of Russia

Select Taxonomic Group and Search Method

This section of BioDat was developed on the basis of the results obtained by the team of nature reserve employees, researchers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and higher educational institutions who have worked in the reserves and national parks. Another group of specialists also contributed summarizing data on habitats of species (genera, families) for several taxonomic groups. Two types of raw data were used for setting up the Reference Information System: lists of species of plants and animals specified for reserves (in the long run for other spots, for example, biological stations within the structure of scientific and educational institutions or areas of long-term field research) and their habitats.

The performers of field observations, creators of herbaria and collections, authors of expert opinions on accuracy of the definitions are the research officers of the reserves and national parks along with researchers and systematic scientists from scientific and educational institutions of Russia. Databases and integrating publications contain information materials accumulated from the early moments of reserves' setting up by more than 100 researchers representing the team of our authors who created this information product.

Summarization of the inventory results was initially arranged by GEF Project for Biodiversity Conservation. However, scope and period of work turned out to be more sizable than originally planned. Therefore, the assistance of Moscow office of IUCN CIS was required for completing the work under the Project DEVELOPMENT OF PARTNER RELATIONS IN THE SPHERE OF CONSERVATION AND USE OF THE RUSSIAN FORESTS (coordinator Alexei Blagovidov). Completion of the work became possible thanks to financial support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

The database was created simultaneously with preparation of the series of publications about species composition of the reserves and national parks where the latest lists of animal species registered within these specially protected wildlife areas are given (IUCN, M.: 2002). Summarization, checking, adjustment of flora and fauna inventory and summarization with the authors were conducted by: vascular plants - Yu.D. Nukhimovskaya, I.A.Gubanov, L.S. Isaeva-Petrova, G.A.Pronjkina; lichens - G.P. Urbanavicus, mammals - A.Yu. Puzachenko and I.Ya.Pavlinov, birds - T.M. Korneeva and M.S. Stishov, amphibians and reptilians - V.F.Orlova, fish - E.D. Vassilieva.

Both publications and information products placed at BioDat are equally protected by copyright. Information published on this site can be used only with reference to the source and in accordance with the established laws. When reference is made to the specific reserve, national park or taxonomic group the names of the authors and section compilers should be mentioned exactly as they are indicated in the original source.

The works on creation of index maps for distribution of certain flora and fauna taxons in Russia were organized by Alexander Martynov. Summarization of materials was performed by: I.Yu.Makeeva - vascular plants, N.V.Mitskevich - macromycete fungi, G.P.Urbanavichus - lichens, A.V.Matalin - ground beetles, V.Yu. Maslyakov - bumblebees and timber beetles, N.I. Shilin - fish and round-mouthed fish (Cyclostomes) occurring in fresh water habitats, A.T.Bozhansky - amphibians and reptilians, V.G.Vinogradov - nesting birds, A.Yu.Puzachenko - mammals.

For higher plants, the total list of which is approaching 24,000 species, we had to forsake maintaining integrated package on the Internet and to use the groups of families arranged in alphabetical order by their Latin names on the fist hierarchic level (totally 11 groups of families). Information reference system is realizing two modes - taxon distribution and species lists of the region. In the latter case there are two submodes - lists of plant species for Federal entity and for separate regions. Distribution of taxon (class/ order/ family/ genus/ species) is shown by two types of maps - dot distribution maps (reserves, in which a taxon occurs) and areal map for federal entities (regions, in which a taxon occurs). In the first case, the database of the flora and fauna composition of the reserves is used, in the second case - the cartographic base with species natural habitats (genera, families) is applied. For some multispecies taxonomic groups no maps of habitats have been created so far and the work with habitats is conducted on the level of genera. In this case, the second index map shows the result "within the habitat bounds of certain genus" and the total number of species that are part of the genera being searched for is indicated.

Under the mode "species lists" for selected federal entity or natural region all the reserves of the given region are searchable and the list of all species occurring in these reserves is provided (the name of the reserve is always indicated). The second list accordingly is made up with the use of the habitats base and all the species, habitats of which are located within the selected region. A big enough section on the zoning map is considered as the minimal habitat unit. All the territory of the former USSR is divided into 600 of such areas (see Habitats of Plants and Animals in North Eurasia). In certain cases search is possible only by Latin or Russian name of the taxon.
